San Diego, California Steady Growth

As far as the California region of San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos Metro Area is concerned, industry wages on the whole have risen by 17.3% for the five-year period 2001-2006. The USA followed suit with an increase of 15.8% in industry wages, trailed by California with a 15.0% hike in industry wages.

However, California led average annual industry wages for the 2nd Quarter 2006 which stood at $45,358. The San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos Metro Area came in second with average annual industry wages of $43,139 (lower by 16.7%.) The country was the laggard with just $40,259.

In the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos Metro Area alone, all industries posted an 8.6% increase in employment for the five years starting 2nd Quarter 2001. This greatly surpassed the employment growth rate of California, which stood at 2.8%. The US trailed behind with an overall employment growth rate of just 2.6% (for the same period.)

The job sector which posted the greatest growth in percentage was the Postal Service, with a mark of 567.9% for the period (2nd Quarter 2001-2nd Quarter 2006.) The Postal Service in the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos Metro Area surpassed both the state of California and the country as far as employment growth is concerned.

Other industries which showed significant gains in growth are: Paint, Coating and Adhesive Manufacturing (that had a 386.2% increase); Amusement Parks and Arcades (285.5% gain); Insurance and Employee Benefit Funds (181.5% increase); and Internet Publishing and Broadcasting (163.3%).

Most of the job losses in the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos Metro Area (90.3% of the total) is attributed to the Other Telecommunications industry for the period 2001 to 2006. This is a big loss compared to the job losses of 36.8% in California for the same job sector. There were other industries that saw significant job losses as well: Sound Recording Industries posted a 79.9% loss; Water, sewage and other systems recorded a 72.7% loss; Other Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing absorbed a 68% loss; and Alumina and Aluminum Production shrunk by 67.1%.

Still, more jobs were also added to the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos Metro Area industries for the period 2001-2006. The most significant growth was experienced in the Full-service Restaurants job sector which generated 7,879 new jobs. This number amounts to 6.0% of overall growth for the Metro Area. Other industries also expanded in the region: Architectural and Engineering Services brought in 6,269 new jobs; Limited-Service Eating Places added 5,190 new jobs; Private Households grew by 4,957 new jobs; and Residential Building Construction produced 4,640 new jobs. The overall number of jobs for the period 2001-2006 stood at 87,320 for the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos Metro Area alone.
