As of May 31, 2007, the area of Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale in the state of Arizona had 1961.8 thousands of Total Non-farm jobs for the month of April 2007. The same region posted 1883.4 thousands Total Non-farm jobs for the same month in 2006.

Of that number, the Natural resources and Mining sector posted 3.0 thousands in employment for April 2007, an increase from the 2.6-thousands level of April 2006.

Construction held its own by employing a total of 186.6 thousands in April 2007, comparable to the 180.5 thousands employed as of April 2006.

On the other hand, Manufacturing jobs fell to 139.3 in April 2007 from the previous level of 140.5 in April 2006.

Trade, Transportation and Utilities showed the greatest gains on the whole, employing 389.4 thousands as of April 2007 (compared to the 375.4 thousands employed in April 2006.)

The Information sector had a marginal loss – employment stood at 31.2 thousands in April 2007 whereas in April 2006 it was at 32.9 thousands.

Financial Activities increased to 158.1 thousands as of April 2007 from the previous level of 152.6 thousands in April 2006.

Professional and Business Services rose moderately to 337.9 thousands (as of April 2007) from 315.3 thousands (in April 2006.)

Education and Health Services also posted modest gains from 194.6 thousands in April 2006 to the April 2007 mark of 202.3 thousands.

Leisure and Hospitality followed suit with an increase from April 2006 at 183.8 thousands to the April 2007 level of 194.1 thousands.

Other Services had slight gains, reaching the 77.0 thousands mark by April 2007 after hovering at 71.1 thousands in April 2006.

Government also increased moderately with its April 2007 data standing at 242.9 thousands while its April 2006 showing leveled off at 234.1

The numbers from the Local Area Unemployment Statistics Program of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (from the Branch of Economic Analysis and Information) show that the unemployment rate for April 2007 fell to 3.2% from the April 2006 rate of 3.5%. The number of unemployed people correspondingly decreased from 69,426 (April 2006) to 65,987 (April 2007.) There were 1,984,093 employed people for the region as of April 2007, whereas in April 2006 there were 1,935,121 employed persons.
For the state of Arizona itself, the unemployment rate for May 2007 decreased to 3.6% from the previous unemployment rate of 4.0% in April 2007. (In May 2006, it stood at 4.1%.)

However, even if the state economy has been relatively dull lately, over 180,000 jobs are projected to be developed within the 2007-2008 timeframe.
