Do you want to get a job in New York, New York? You’re in luck: the unemployment rate for New York State stood at 4.0% in April 2007, which was lower than the 4.3% of March 2007 (and comparatively less than the 4.7% of April 2006.) For New York City itself, unemployment dropped to 4.2% in April 2007 from the previous 4.4% of March 2007 (a significant level, considering it stood at 5.0% 12 months before.) So if you are looking for a city where you can hold down a good job, New York may be the place for you.

Non-farm jobs for the state rose by 0.9% (or 76,300 jobs) from April 2006. Private sector jobs jumped by 1.0% (or 72,700 jobs) for the same period.

For New York City itself, during the 12-month period ending in January 2007, private sector jobs rose by 2.0% to the 3,091,800 mark (an increase of 60,600 jobs.) Educational and health care services showed the highest gain of 18,300, followed by professional and business services with 16,800, financial activities with 12,800, and leisure and hospitality with 6,800. Natural resources, mining and construction brought up the rear with a gain of 4,400. Manufacturing lost a sizeable number of jobs (6,300) in this time.

Getting a job in New York City is a challenge, but it isn’t insurmountable.
According to the Occupational Employment Statistics Survey of the New York State Department of Labor, Employment Prospects (up to year 2014) are listed as “Very Favorable” for the following occupations: Accountants and Auditors, Administrative Services Managers, Adult Literacy, Remedial Education and GED teachers and instructors; Advertising and Promotions Managers; Advertising Sales Agents; Airline Pilots, Co-pilots and Flight Engineers; Ambulance Drivers and Attendants (except Emergency Medical Technicians); Amusement and Recreation Attendants, Architects (except landscape and naval), Art directors, Audio and Video Equipment Technicians, Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics, Baggage Porters and Bellhops, Bartenders, Bill and Account Collectors, Biological Scientists, and Brickmasons and Blockmasons.

Certain businesses are planning to expand into New York City, a sign that business honchos are confident about the city’s future economic performance.

J.C. Penney will be opening a 125,000-sq-ft outlet in the Manhattan Mall found in Sixth Avenue. This sizeable branch will be sandwiched between the 32nd and 33rd Streets of Manhattan.

Delta Airlines, which is restructuring after earlier entering bankruptcy, wants to funnel $40 million towards the upgrade of JFK Terminals 2 and 3 as part of its move to focus on international flights. This airline’s strategy is expected to bring in more traffic.

Another airline, American Airlines, transferred to its new Terminal B in the same airport (John F. Kennedy International Airport). The facility, which is expected to be completely finished in 2008, required an investment of $1.3 billion.
