Columbus, Ohio, is now experiencing strong growth of its diverse economy. In Ohio, it is presently the largest city and capital of that state. This city (which is named after Christopher Columbus) has emerged as the 15th largest city in the whole United States. For those who are interested in a career in government, Columbus is definitely a good place to consider this endeavor. Being the capital city of the state, many job opportunities are available in the field of government service. But it is a must (not to mention an advantage) for applicants to pass the Civil Service Exam. Other careers in the private sector like professional and business services, and leisure and hospitality, performed well in the second quarter of 2007.

Due to the influx of job seekers (composed of both locals and immigrants) who want to try their luck in the city, the trend contributed to a decrease of 300 or less than 0.1% in the employment rate during the first quarter of 2007. Vietnam, Somalia, Russia and Mexico are the countries who contributed to the notable number of immigrants in the city.

The various sectors which have gained more workers for the Columbus employment pool as of June 2007 are: Construction with 38,800 workers; Manufacturing with 77,500 workers; Wholesale Trade with 38,500 workers; Retail and Trade with 102,800 workers; Transportation and Utilities with 46,900 workers; Information with 18,500 workers; Financial Activities with 72,400 workers; Professional and Business Services with 145,900 workers; Educational and Health Services with 108,600 workers; Leisure and Hospitality with 91,500 workers; Other services with 37,000; and Government with 156,100. The total number of workers in the Columbus employment pool is 934,600. Jobseekers who want to pursue a career in professional services and leisure stand to have a good chance in landing a job there, since this sector has seen a marked increase in employment. However, for those who would like to pursue construction and mining, and retail and trade, types of jobs, this is not a good time in Columbus for those industries since such sectors registered a -3% and -1.1% decrease, respectively, in employment.

Columbus is a rapidly growing city with a population of 733,203 as of 2006 census. With a total land area of 210.3 square mile, it has a density of 1,306.4/km2.

The Local Government of Columbus constantly monitors the trend of employment in the city and is actively seeking ways to support the improvement of its economy. This may have been the reason why Columbus ranked number 3 in the Cities of the Future list, according to fDi Magazine on International Investment. It has passed with flying colors, based on more than 60 criterions in the following seven categories: Best Economic Potential, Most Cost-effective, Best Human Resources, Quality of Life, Best Infrastructure, Most Business Friendly and Best Development and Investment Promotion.

With such a record to speak for it, economy wise, the future looks bright for Columbus as the experts see it.
