The 25 leading occupations in Atlanta (based on the amount of compensation offered in 2005 for an entry-level position) are: Air Traffic Controllers ($48.60), Chief Executives ($46.84), Pharmacists ($36.48), Optometrists ($36.21), Computer and Information Systems Managers ($34.52), Atmospheric and Space Scientists ($31.88), Lawyers ($31.51), Engineering Managers ($31.50), Natural Sciences Managers ($31.27), Computer Hardware Engineers ($29.10), Hydrologists ($27.93), Marketing Managers ($27.85), Sales Managers ($27.18), Financial Managers ($27.07), Economists ($26.95), Actuaries ($26.64), Computer Software Engineers, Systems Software ($26.61), Arbitrators, Mediators, and Conciliators ($26.39), Electronics Engineers, except Computer ($26.34), Computer Software Engineers, Applications ($26.19), and Electrical Engineers ($26.13) – the four last occupations of Aerospace Engineers, Models, Nuclear Engineers, and Petroleum Engineers made it to this list but their corresponding wages for 2005 are listed as “Confidential”.

The 10 leading industries in the Metro area composed of Atlanta, Sandy Springs and Marietta (based on the highest numbers of employment from the 2 nd Quarter of 2005 to the 1 st Quarter of 2006) were: Administrative and Support Services (191,269 workers), Food Services and Drinking Places (168,763 workers), Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (159,501), Merchant Wholesalers, Durable Goods (84,991 workers), Ambulatory Health Care Services (73,289 workers), Specialty Trade Contractors (71,134 workers), Credit Intermediation and Related Activities (60,432 workers), Hospitals (57,369 workers), General Merchandise Stores (49,906 workers), and Management of Companies and Enterprises (43,403.) These statistics pertained to both male and female workers aged 14-99 years employed only by private companies for that time period.

The civilian labor force of Atlanta (as of April 2007) was made up of 2,703,352 individuals. Of that number, 2,594,278 were employed while 109,074 remained unemployed. The latter contributed to the city’s unemployment rate of 4.0%.

Meanwhile, the state of Georgia itself had a civilian labor force (also as of April 2007) composed of 4,808, 977 employable people. The number of those who had jobs stood at 4,610,245; the unemployed numbered 198,732.to boost the state’s unemployment rate of 4.1%.
